Typically speaking, when most people move, they use standard moving services. At AM Moving, we offer both full-service (including packing and unpacking) and self-service options to meet your needs.
However, if you’re willing to put in a little extra work and you want to save even more money,
you may decide that our freight shipping is the best choice. If you’re not familiar with freight
shipping services, allow us to illustrate how it works.
Freight vs. Standard Moving
With our standard moving options, part of the service we provide is coming into your home to pick up your belongings. Whether you pack everything yourself or you let us take care of it, we
will handle the heavy lifting and transportation of all of your items from point A to point B. With freight shipping, however, it’s usually only curb-to-curb. This means that you have to pack everything yourself and have it ready to go once the truck arrives. We can provide pickup and drop-off services as well, but we do charge extra for that, so keep that in mind.
Packing and Loading With Freight Shipping
When you use a standard moving service, boxes and other bulky items are handled individually. Everything is stacked inside the truck however it will fit, meaning that some pieces may be better outside of the box.
With freight shipping, however, all of your boxes have to be on a pallet. Large furniture and appliances can be loaded onto the truck by themselves, but they have to be of a certain size, and they are not as well protected against damage unless you cover them accordingly. When packing for freight, you want to load as many boxes onto a pallet as possible (heaviest ones on the bottom) and then wrap them all in cling film. You can usually find the film at any moving and storage place, including at AM Moving.
Carrying your boxes to and from the curb is handled by you (unless you pay us to do it), and we typically give you a time frame when we will pick everything up. Unlike standard moving services, a time frame is necessary because we may be making multiple stops.
Full Truck Load (FTL) vs. Less Than Load (LTL)
If you have a lot of stuff to move, you may be able to reserve an entire truck. FTL shipping will cost more, but the truck will only carry your belongings and go to your destination.
On the other side, LTL shipping means that your items are shipped with other pallets. This means that the truck may make multiple stops along the way, and your boxes may be
transferred between vehicles as necessary. As such, if you use our LTL services, we highly recommend labeling everything clearly so that it all stays together.
When Freight Shipping is the Right Choice
If you’re only moving a few boxes and furniture, it’s probably not a good idea to go with AM Moving freight services. However, if you’re moving a lot of stuff (i.e., a two-story home), you can save a lot by going this route. Yes, you will need to do more packing and lifting, but the savings can be well worth it, particularly if you’re moving out of state or cross-country.
